    Road v. Treadmill

Since utilizing my YMCA membership, I’ve taken the opportunity to go running on their treadmills for about 30 minutes each visit. I have to say that running on a treadmill is very difficult for me. I think my stamina has been good for the intervals I’ve set, but I just have this constant fear that I’m going to trip and fall and in front of so many people. Thankfully, nothing like that has happened yet, but my experience on the treadmill these past few weeks has gotten me thinking that I enjoy running best when I’m on the road. I like being able to set my own pace as I go along the road; on the treadmill, I end up stressing out over the intervals changing on me and me not being prepared for the change in pace.

Right now, the only road running I do is the 2.5+ mile block around my house (usually 2 or 3 times). I tried doing Kapiolani Park for a few weeks, but I gave up after awhile because it was rather bothersome to run earlier in the day because of my schedule and because of my blood sugar management. I may look to occasionally do that, but I think it works best for me to run around my neighborhood, though I do enjoy new running scenery now and then.

With all that said, I have been seriously considering entering road races because I think I can actually thrive in that kind of setting. When I did the GAR this past February, I thought I would just be walking because I thought it would be hard to make pace with the huge crowds of people there, but it turned out to be rather energizing and fun to have a lot of people running alongside you. It made for fun times running behind people and trying to keep pace with them (and then when you got tired, you walk for awhile and then run behind someone else…heheh.) Signing up for road races is something I have to plan out because I need to request the days off I need from work. If anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know.

I thought about embedding this video to this entry, but it probably would have been a little corny to do so. Incidentally, this is a song I like running to. ;)

    Roll With It, Baby

I’ve been meaning to post a “power song” for every run that I do. I think it’s good to share songs that I like to jog to since I’m always open to discovering good running songs.

When you think about it hard enough, Steve Winwood songs are pretty awesome; I can’t think of a song of his I don’t like. For me, “Roll With It” is one of those songs that invokes childhood memories because of its heavy radio rotation back in 1988. Somehow I ended up putting it in my running playlist, and it has turned out to be a really great song to move to with a steady beat and rather motivating lyrics.

I had a fairly good run today. Went about 2 and a half times around my block, which equated to about 6 miles in about 1 hour: http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikeplus/en_US/plus/#//runs/detail/807837932/5185814/all/allRuns/

Chee to the Hoo! I am at Level Blue!

By the hair of my chinny chin chin, I finally hit Nike+ Level Blue, which means I have accumulated 1000 kilometers (or 621 miles) since starting on Nike+ back in March 2009. I had set a goal for myself to do this by the end of May but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. I did run the distance but on my last run when I supposed to have hit Level Blue, my iPod Nano (ironically called “Little Bloo”) decided to freeze and when I had to hard reset it, I lost the run. I was a grrr-bag, to put it mildly. Oh well, better late than never.

So, what’s next? Well, the next level is Purple which is 931 miles away. Needless to say, I’m not shooting for that anytime soon as that is just too far to reach. Who knows though? I had said the same thing about Level Blue and here I am; I have to say that it’s a miracle that I made it this far. On the other hand, I may have to consider giving my joints a rest from running because of my arthritis, but the strange thing is that I’m enjoying running more due to my weight training. By improving my flexibility and strength in my back and arms, I feel it really makes running bearable and enjoyable in addition to giving me the endorphin afterglow.

Never say never, I guess. Here’s to the next goal…however long that may take!

    A Week of Difference

It has been a week since I started weight training and after only doing it three times in this one week, I have definitely noticed a difference. The things I need to lift on a day to day basis feels lighter and less of a strain on my overall upper body. Then when I did my run around the neighborhood, my back was able to stay straight and it just gave me more stamina to go faster. I don’t know if it was all a fluke, or if it’s all in my mind but this feeling is definitely giving me motivation to just keep going.

    Pain is the Best Motivator…Unfortunately

I know there’s a long entry I could write with this picture attached, but all I am going to say is that I ran more when my arthritis pain in my hand was hardly bearable. Since being on Enbrel, the pain has subsided and now the the endorphins aren’t as good a reward as it was before.

Well, in the spirit of mixing things up, I joined the YMCA so that I can take up swimming and give my joints a little break while still getting exercise. I hope it works out for me.

    Cowbell Bebop

This evening I went through my iTunes trying to figure out my running playlist for the month. For me to actually enjoy running, I have to have a fairly well thought out playlist of songs. I have found that it has been one of the keys to my Nike+ success. After a while, songs that once got me pumped up end up having a less potent effect on me. I am constantly perusing the web and iTunes Essentials for ideas on what to download and use. It’s getting more and more challenging to find something, because as I mentioned, I’m not so much into new music anymore.

I recently discovered one track that I had in my iTunes for about 3 years. It was quite a pleasant surprise, because it was something that I had put together in GarageBand back when I was learning how to use it. I have absolutely no sense or understanding of how to compose music, and so this result is just a testament to how awesome GarageBand is. I call the track “Cowbell Bebop” because of the use of the one Cowbell loop in GarageBand (and yes, they are ALL loops in this 1 minute “song.”)

Just thought I’d share. I’ve never made another one since. I’d say it’s a pretty good fluke, considering it makes for one effective Nike+ power song…for now.

    Need to Please

It’s been a rough week and all I can really say about it is that the worst of it is over and life is moving onward. One little bummer about this week was that I wasn’t able to go running on Tuesday due to illness. By Wednesday, I felt quite better and so I thought I could try to go then. I couldn’t even manage one lap around Kapiolani Park before my stomach started to bother me and so I had to end the run quite abruptly. I was bummed but still happy to get something in for the week.

After syncing my run to Nike+, I spotted my “live” Nike+ Avatar on my website and saw that she was not all impressed with a 1.4 mile run. Remembering that today marks the end of one year with Nike+, I was thinking that my Avatar SHOULD be impressed! I’ve come a long way baby! To do 1.4 miles and to jog most of it is something I could not do a year ago!

So despite this last blah run, Nike+ this past year has been a win for me. My only regret was that I was not able to reach level BLUE (1000km), but being 96k (or 60 miles) short isn’t too bad either. I hope to get there before summer starts…hopefully. I have an avatar to make happy, and it seems she demands results!

    Eff This, I’m Walking

Tuesday has been my running day for quite some time now and with the changes to my schedule recently, I have had to do my running in town after work. It’s been interesting having new scenery and to actually run in the daylight as opposed to the nighttime in my neighborhood. Last week, I had a phenomenal run of going 5 and half times around the perimeter of Kapiolani Park and I thought that maybe I could try it once again and hope to keep pace.

Well, the weather has been rather cold and windy (at least for Hawaii) and though I had been encouraged by the patches of blue in the sky, I could not contend with the weather for today’s run. I found that the strong wind was more than enough to exhaust me and discourage me from jogging. I ended up speed walking a lot of the 3 laps I took. By the end of the 3rd lap, I stopped my Nike+ workout and decided to just walk the last lap. It had me pretty bummed.

What was most distressing was that my right knee is starting to get sore. When I started to take up running, my reasoning was that my joints were eventually going to go to hell because of my arthritis, so I might as well make use of them while I can. Perhaps I half joked about that, because the thought of not being able to utilize my knees is now scaring me. I am willing to endure whatever treatments they prescribe me to spare the rest of my joints. It may turn out that I just can’t run anymore, and that would be a real bummer.
